UFC 131: "Dos Santos vs. Carwin" main card preview
by Mike Williams on June 10, 2011

When a fighter is forced off of a card due to injury, it's generally disappointing. When the fighter is part of the main event it's even more of a bummer. Add to that the fact that in this case it's Brock Lesnar, arguably the biggest draw in the sport, and it's a potential catastrophe. Not so fast. All of those things are true, unless of course you can replace Lesnar with a fighter like Shane Carwin. That's exactly what the UFC did when Lesnar's diverticulitis returned and the main event is about as strong as it could be. The event will take place at Vancouver's Rogers Center and the although the poster has changed, it's every bit as strong as the original.

Donald Cerrone vs. Vagner Rocha

Rocha comes to the UFC by way of Mixed Fighting Alliance, Strikeforce, and Bellator. The 29 year-old highly decorated Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt will be taking the place of an injured Mac Danzig and suddenly finds himself on the main card of a huge event against one of the sport's biggest stars. The big stage shouldn't be a huge culture shock for the Rio native, having competed in some of the largest jiu-jitsu and grappling tournaments.

Cerrone has been involved in some epic battles. Since signing with Zuffa, more than half of his fights have ended in bonuses for Fight of the Night. Two of those fights were honored by many media outlets as fights of the year. Cerrone is a long and quick lightweight with very good mauy-Thai, slick submission skills, and a solid chin. He's also recently shown a vast improvement in his wrestling, especially his takedowns. He put those improvements on display in his recent win over Paul Kelly, mixing it up with his strikes and keeping Kelly guessing before choking him out in the second round.

Analysis and pick;  Rocha isn't exactly a one-dimensional jiu-jitsu guy, his stand up is actually solid. Cerrone on the other hand is one of the more rounded fighters in the division right now and has an experience advantage at big shows. Look for Cerrone to utilize his advantage and keep the fight standing then defending well if the fight does hit the floor.

Pick; Cerrone by decision.

Jon Olav Einemo vs. Dave Herman

Einemo is a bit of a mystery at this point. Of his seven pro fights, exactly two have been against legitimate names. One was a loss to Fabricio Werdum and the other was a win over James Thompson. Thompson has won only 4 of his last 16 fights and Einemo hasn't fought since that 2006 victory. The big Norwegian was originally slated to use his jiu-jitsu black belt to take on Shane Carwin on this card before Carwin was moved to the main event. He is, however, 6-1 and a very dangerous grappler. This is a fight that people shouldn't overlook. There's a reason why it remains on the main card.

Herman will also be making his UFC debut. He's currently 20-2 and his 14 knockouts are a testament to his power. Although he's made his bones in less competitive promotions, he does have a victory over a 43 year old Don Frye. Another notable name on his record, Sokodjou, was one of Herman's losses although it was via disqualification.

Analysis;  Good old-fashioned ring rust could come into play here. Einemo has the skills to submit Herman or control his way to a decision but a 5...
