Love him or hate him, Chael Sonnen has been the man doing all the trash talking for the main event of UFC 134. With both the champion Anderson Silva, and the challenger Yushin Okami speaking little to no English, and both being mild mannered and respectful, Zuffa needed someone to step up to the plate and create a verbal buzz around this fight.
Who better than the king of trash talk, Mr. Sonnen.
There was a large amount of buzz surrounding Sonnen, and whether or not he would be in Rio to corner his new friend Okami. After many teaser tweets, Sonnen came forth and admitted he would not be attending, citing one of Okami's sponsors threatening to withhold pay from Okami if Sonnen was in his corner. This sponsor, Praetorian, is a Brazilian MMA company, and it is no shock they were opposed to Sonnen being there as the former WEC standout had made several disrespectful, and borderline xenophobic comments about the people of Brazil in the past year and a half.
Since he will not be in Rio, it appears Zuffa is still using Sonnen's outlandish trash talking to help sell this fight to mainstream fans.
Zuffa has gone as far as letting Sonnen do a promo video for this fight, and portions of it were used at yesterday's press conference promoting the event. Sonnen holds nothing back in this video, calling the middleweight champion a horrible fighter, and accusing him of "ducking" Okami for the last five years.
Those who follow the sport closely would take exception to those comments. However, to the newer fan, this type of professional wrestling style of hype seems to be working quite well. Records will be broken this weekend, and like it or not, Sonnen has helped promote this card.
