The Toyota Center in Houston, Texas will play host to one of the most anticipated cards in this stacked fall season. Two title fights will headline the show as challenger Kenny Florian will try to solve the puzzle that is featherweight champ Jose Aldo. The main event features Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard III. Maynard took a decision back in 2008 and they fought to a draw last January in one of the most exciting fights of the year.
Melvin Guillard vs. Joe Lauzon
Guillard will be trying to extend his winning streak to six. He's talking title shot and many fans are echoing his sentiments. The Young Assassin's potential has never been called into question. What has been his biggest nemesis is his ability to stay out of trouble in big fights and finding himself caught in submissions. Now trained and cornered by Greg Jackson those mistakes should be a thing of the past and Guillard is close to number one contender status.
Lauzon is a performance bonus waiting to happen. Six of his last seven bouts have ended with an extra check in his pocket. Fighting a guy who's shown to have a tendency to land in submissions is right up his alley. Of J-Lau's 20 professional wins, a staggering 16 have come by tap and the remaining four by (T)KO. Yes, Lauzon has finished every fight he's ever won.
Analysis and prediction; A few years ago this pick would have been Lauzon by submission but the upgraded version of Melvin Guillard should be able to keep this fight standing for the most part, which is where he wants it to be. Lauzon himself isn't easy to finish so Guillard by decision is the pick here.
Leonard Garcia vs. Nam Phan
Garcia has taken part in some great fights. Always willing to stand and slug it out, "Bad Boy" has become quite a fan-favorite and in the opinion of many he's also been the recipient of some generous judging. This rematch is taking place because many, including Dana White, believed that Phan won their first contest last December when Garcia was awarded the decision. Garcia's style has been exciting yet somewhat predictable but fans should keep in mind that he and Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone are close friends and training partners. Cerrone has definitely stepped up his game since coming to the UFC and supporters of his friend are hoping to see the same.
Phan has lost five of his last seven fights, one of those was the controversial split decision to Garcia but regardless, this guy needs a win. Since that loss the Vietnamese-American has also dropped a decision to former WEC champ Mike Brown. Phan has a diverse skill set, with black belts in jiu-jitsu, karate, and Quyen Dao, a martial art created in Viet Nam. The former Ultimate Fighter competitor is 16-9 for his career and has been to battle with some highly ranked competition.
Analysis and prediction; Phan needs a win for sure but so does Garcia. The first fight was closely contested and Garcia is part of the better camp here. His recent style has been fun to watch but it hasn't been successful in the win column. If Garcia's corner can convince him to fight with a little more defense he should be able to come out with a decision.
