UFC 98: Evans vs. Machida Preview
by Mike Williams on May 22, 2009

For the first time in the history of the UFC, two undefeated fighters will square off for a championship when Rashad Evans attempts to defend his light-heavyweight title against Lyoto Machida.  Although primarily known for his wrestling background, Evans' striking game has developed into a dangerous one.  Four of his last five bouts have ended in a KO or TKO, including a devastating finish of Forrest Griffin to win the title at UFC 92.

Landing punches on Lyoto Machida (14-0) is something that hasn't come easily to his past opponents.  In fact, fight statistics show that "The Dragon" has absorbed less strikes per minute than any UFC fighter, ever.  He's adapted his Shotokan Karate style to mma in such a way that makes him the most elusive fighter ever to step into the octagon.

Few rivalries have been as heated as the one that's been brewing between veterans Matt Hughes and Matt Serra.  The war of words dates back to 2005 when Serra didn't like Hughes as a coach on season 2 of The Ultimate Fighter.  Cut to season 4 where Serra was a contestant and Hughes was once again a coach, Serra made no attempt to hide his criticism of Hughes, calling him a "stuck up farm boy jock".  The fued progressed as they became opposing coaches of season 6 of The Ultimate Fighter but their scheduled UFC 79 fight was cancelled due to a back injury suffered by Serra.  Now, a year and a half after UFC 79, the opportunity has finally arrived for these former welterweight champs to settle the score in the co-main event.

A lightweight matchup between Frankie Edgar and Sean Sherk is another prime candidate for "Fight of the Night".  Edgar is 9-1 in his pro career with notable wins over Tyson Griffin and Hermes Franca.  Sherk is 33-3-1 with his only losses coming to world class fighters B.J. Penn, Georges St. Pierre, and Matt Hughes.  He too has defeated Griffin and Franca as well as Kenny Florian and Nick Diaz.  Both men have strong wrestling backgrounds and fast paced styles which makes them among the most entertaining fighters in all of mma.

Middleweight Chael Sonnen will be looking to rebound from a submission loss to Demian Maia at UFC 95 as he takes on 11-1 Dan Miller.  Miller was slated to face Yushin Okami but an injury forced Okami to withdraw.  Sonnen is a veteran at 21-10 but Miller hasn't lost a fight in over three years.

Rounding out the main card is French fighter Xavier Foupa-Pokam taking on Drew McFedries.  Foupa-Pokam rattled off seven consecutive victories before losing to Denis Kang just over a month ago at UFC 97.  McFedries is coming off of back-to-back defeats at the hands of Thales Leites and Mike Massenzio, respectively.

The undercard of UFC 98 looks like this;

Welterweight bout: Brock Larson vs. Chris Wilson
Heavyweight bout: Patrick Barry vs. Tim Hague
Lightweight bout: Phillipe Nover vs. Kyle Bradley
Light Heavyweight bout: Krzysztof Soszynski vs. Andre Gusmao
Welterweight bout: Yoshiyuki Yoshida vs. Brandon Wolff
Lightweight bout: David Kaplan vs. George Roop
