UFC Files Suit Against Bellator and Ken Pavia
by Bryan Levick on July 30, 2010

Up until this point Bellator Fighting Championships has had a very productive first two seasons. They always seem to have exciting match-ups and have been able to carve out a nice little niche for themselves.

Unfortunately they may have been playing unfairly if Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports is right. Iole is reporting that Zuffa, the company that owns both the UFC and the WEC has filed a lawsuit against both Bellator Fighting Championships and MMA Agents owner Ken Pavia.

According to the suit Pavia sent Zuffa documents which included fighter agreements to BFC head Bjorn Rebney. Apparently there are some emails that were exchanged between Pavia and Rebney that the UFC became aware of.

More from Iole:

"An email which Zuffa's lawsuit alleges is from Rebney to Pavia on July 4 was attached as an exhibit to the 16-page suit. In it, Rebney writes, "... You've been great about sending us "All" of the seminal docs from the UFC, so that we can re-do them and implement them for Bellator."

Later, the email Zuffa alleges to have been written by Rebney continues, "Please list each in terms of what it is for and how the UFC uses them/implements them. ... Then I'm going to have our team Monday re-type them and we will sufficiently alter them such that they will appear to be ours and not theirs."

As you can see things are not looking too good for either Rebney or Pavia. A scandal such as this can have a wide effect on the sport. Pavia is one of the sports biggest agents as he represents such fighters as Bret Rogers, Anthony Johnson, Ben Saunders, Chris Lytle, Jay Hieron and Martin Kampmann.

As far as Bellator is concerned, sponsors may become scared off, not only because of these allegations, but because they won't want to cross the UFC. Knowing Dana White like we do, he will not rest until he sees Bellator punished to the maximum extent allowable by law.

Zuffa is seeking actual and punitive damages as well as a permanent injunction against both BFC and Pavia from using any of their intellectual property.

Are they saying Bellator used the documents to try to offer better deals to fighters under contract or that they were using some contractual mumbo-jumbo to screw fightes like Zuffa does. Yeah, I totally don't get it! thebutterflybee: Yeh I'm confused too. I read it as they were trying to copy the way the UFC does stuff because they are so good. I dont get it. Wandering_Minstrel: This does not look good for Bellator. EverlastingSpringtime: THIS STINKS...... By the sounds of things its about taking contracts from one company and changeing it to suit another. Pavia was after the blueprint for the ufc contracts to be able to save himself costs i would imagine... now the lawyers are gonna clean up anyway. I understand the legalities of it all and UFC will succeed in this suit against both parties involved. Just because of the emails and files sent. I just hope they dont go to far with it, MMA needs organisations like BFC, but Pavia should know better than that. valhalla: Zuffa must have created fake emails. There is no way any business in the world can put that stuff in print in this day and age. IwishIwasMMA: WOW..... I swear to god I already explained what the email said. Did one of the mods delete it or something? This.. is sort of becoming frustrating..
