The first defense of the UFC featherweight title is now official for UFC 125: "Resolution" in Las Vegas on New Year's Day. Jose Aldo will put his new title on the line against rising star Josh Grispi at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The fight will air live on pay-per-view as the co-main event to the lightweight title bout between champion Frankie Edgar and challenger Gray Maynard. The card was in need of another attractive fight after injury forced Shane Carwin to back out of his fight with Roy Nelson.
UFC President Dana White is excited about the prospect of Aldo in the UFC. "Jose Aldo is one of the best fighters in the world, pound for pound, and you'll see why on Jan. 1," he said in a press release. "Aldo can do it all, and his historic arrival in the UFC as its first featherweight champion is going to set an exciting new standard. But Josh Grispi is a finisher, and he's got every intention of taking the featherweight title back to Boston."
The WEC title is retired after two defenses of the belt by Aldo, who's riding an 11 fight winning streak. His name is near the top of virtually every pound for pound ranking in the world.
Grispi, a Massachusetts native, was 4-0 in the WEC and 14-1 as a pro. He's finished all but one of those wins and holds notable victories over Jens Pulver and current fellow contender Mark Hominick.
