Bizarre news coming out of the UFC as former Strikeforce welterweight champion, Nick Diaz, is removed from his super fight with George St. Pierre and will be replaced by Carlos Condit at UFC 137 according to ufc.com.
Diaz failed to appear in two successive press conferences attributed to missing three flights within 24 hours which resulted in him getting booted from his bout with St. Pierre.
"I've had my reservations about Nick Diaz for some time. All I asked the kid to do was play the game this much (holding fingers slightly apart). I need you to do certain things. You have to show up to the press conference, you have to promote this fight. He looked at me and said he would, and he lied to me. I've promoted over 1600 fights and this has never happened once. I'd rather pull the fight now than risk him not showing up on the night of the fight. This blows my mind...Nick Diaz has lost his chance at the welterweight championship, and Carlos Condit gets it. This kid absolutely deserves it," UFC president, Dana White, said.
Early reports from his long time coach, Cesar Gracie, on his twitter stated that Diaz was involved in a plane accident but these claims were later revealed to be untrue. Apparently Diaz has gone into hiding, with many including Gracie unable to contact him. Diaz's future with the UFC remains unknown.
Replacing the Stockton native is Condit. Condit is a member of Greg Jackson's "Jackson's Submission Fighting" as well as St. Pierre. As a result Jackson has stated through numerous sources that he will not be training either fighter, leaving that job to Condit's and St. Pierre's hand-picked teams.
Condit is currently riding a four fight win streak and was originally scheduled to fight BJ Penn. He last defeated formally unbeaten Korean judoka, Dong Hyun Kim, in brutal fashion that started with a flying knee leading to a KO victory in the opening round at UFC 132. Condit is also the former WEC welterweight champion, defending his belt twice.
Penn's opponent remains to be seen.
Heavyweights Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Frank Mir set to rematch at UFC 140 according to ufc.com.
"Both men are known as two of the premiere submission specialists in the division but have shown dangerous striking skills as well," White said.
Shortly after Noguiera's stunning knockout victory over heavyweight prospect, Brendan Schaub at UFC 134, "Minotauro" has stated his desires to rematch Mir and now that wish has been granted as both men verbally agree for the rematch.
Mir became the first man ever to stop Noguiera in a fight, Mir won via TKO in the second round, during their first meeting at UFC 92.
Since then Noguiera has gone 2-1, defeating Randy Couture and Schaub while dropping a fight to Cain Velasquez.
Similarly, Mir sports a 3-2 record since their meeting. He currently rides a two fight win streak with wins over Roy Nelson and Mirko Filipovic. During this run, Mir lost in two title bouts against Shane Carwin and Brock Lesnar, for the UFC heavyweight interim belt and the UFC unified heavyweight belt respectively.
UFC 140 is currently scheduled for December 10 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The event is without a headliner and the Nogueira vs. Mir rematch could likely fill that role.
