UFC news roundup: "El Nino" and "Bigfoot" to join the UFC soon and TUF finale a 5 round fight
by Hubert Lau on October 03, 2011

Strikeforce's lightweight champion, Gilbert Melendez, could be joining the UFC's lightweight ranks very soon according to fightersonlymagazine.co.uk.

"Yeah, we do want to bring Gilbert Melendez over, and we're looking at it right now. We're looking to bring Gilbert Melendez over ASAP," said UFC president, Dana White.

Possibly aside from Eddie Alvarez, Bellator's lightweight champion, Melendez is the other significant lightweight talent outside of the UFC. In his nine year career, "El Nino" has only lost twice while notching 19 victories. Currently Melendez is on a five fight win streak, last decimating Tatsuya Kawajiri in April to defend his Strikeforce lightweight belt. Melendez also hold wins over lightweight standouts in the world ranked, Shinya Aoki, and Josh Thomson.

"The title shot is a possibility. The thing is with that division, it's so stacked, there are a lot of possibilities...We'll see what happens with the timing," said White when addressing a possible immediate title shot for Melendez upon his arrival to the UFC.

Currently Melendez is scheduled to make his third title defense against Jorge Masvidal at Strikeforce 37 in December 17.

Strikeforce heavyweight, Antonio Silva, might also be making a move to the UFC in the near future according to tatame.com.

"He has a contract with Strikeforce, but Strikeforce is now controlled by the UFC and we're watching Strikeforce fighters going to the UFC all the time," said Silva's manager, Alex Davis.

Silva was recently eliminated in Strikeforce's heavyweight grand prix's semifinal round by late replacement, Daniel Cormier via knockout. Prior to that upset loss, Silva was riding a three fight win streak that also included a dominating performance over Fedor Emelianenko.

"UFC's heavyweight division is big, but they could have even more, and I'm sure Bigfoot will be in the UFC real soon...There's a lot of great fights for him inside the octagon, and he'll shine there," Davis added.

The Ultimate Fighter season 14 finale between Michael Bisping and Jason Miller will be the second five round main event according to bloodyelbow.com.

Although the match-up has been booked since the announcement of the featherweight-bantamweight season, it has been recently confirmed that the fight will follow the new five round main event guidelines. The first of the five round non-title bouts is between Chris Leben and Mark Munoz at the headliner for UFC 138 on November 5.

Bisping (21-3) last defeated Jorge Rivera via TKO in the second round at UFC 127, extending his win streak to three fights. Miller (24-7 (1 no contest)) submitted Japanese grappling ace, Kazushi Sakuraba, via triangle choke at Dream 16 and is now riding a two fight streak. Their fight is sure to bring fireworks as the two already begin to butt heads coaching on The Ultimate Fighter.

Both men would need a solid performance if they wish to live up to their title contention aspirations, especially Bisping who has repeatedly stated that he is among the middleweight's best as well as declaring that Anderson Silva has not cleared out the division until Silva fights him.

The Ultimate Fighter season 14 Finale will be held on December 3 at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada.
