UFC news roundup: Velasquez vs. dos Santos on Fox, Silva fought hurt, Akiyama dropping to 170
by Hubert Lau on September 05, 2011

Many noticeable updates from the UFC, no surprise when you're the top dog of MMA promotions.

As announced last week, Cain Velasquez is set to defend his UFC heavyweight title for the first time and on a nationally broadcast event on Fox against Junior dos Santos.

"One thing we will be doing is launching the UFC on FOX with a Super Bowl-style red carpet and tailgate party with every star in Hollywood and every dignitary that we need to get out there to launch this thing,"  Eric Shanks, Fox Sports media group co-president and COO, said.

Promotion for the fight has already begun, as seen during the Major League Baseball (MLB) match-up on Fox between the Texas Rangers and the Boston Red Sox this past weekend.

This is the first instance where the UFC-Fox partnership deal is seen in effect, with more UFC advertising sure to follow in future Fox programming. Advertising for UFC 135 also occurred during this game. The average viewership for a MLB broadcast is 14 million and also encompasses the "male sports fan" demographics the UFC is targeting,

Velasquez vs. dos Santos on November 12 in Anaheim, California will be the first UFC event on a major network.

Velasquez won the heavyweight title by handily defeating former champion, Brock Lesnar, via TKO at UFC 121. Sporting a top notch wrestling base and crisp boxing, Velasquez has fought his way to a flawless 9-0 record. Opposing him, dos Santos is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu brown belt under Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira but is more famously known for his heavy hands. Riding an eight fight win streak going into his bout with Velasquez, dos Santos battered Shane Carwin at UFC 131 via unanimous decision to earn him the title shot.

Elsewhere in the UFC, middleweight champion Anderson Silva reveals that he fought injured in his bout against Yushin Okami at UFC 134 and fellow middleweight, Yoshihiro Akiyama, plans to drop to the welterweight division according to mmamania.com.

Silva recently fought Okami at UFC 134, resulting in a second round TKO win for Silva and avenging a disqualification loss to Okami in 2006. Despite another dominating title defense, his ninth in a row, Silva went into his rematch with Okami injured.

"A month before the fight, I hurt my shoulder training with Junior dos Santos and stepped in feeling pain in Rio. I had to take painkillers and advised the Athletic Commission about the medicine I took. I talked to my doctors a lot. I did MRI right after and began to feel pain on the shoulder and the medics released me. They told me that was not too bad. It is a small lesion, in manguito (rotador) muscle I think, but it bothers me. I will take some time resting to do the treatment," Silva said.

Zuffa conducted pre-fight medicals and drug tests for all of its fighters since Brazil lacked a regulatory commissioning body.

No word on how long Silva will be out due to this shoulder injury but it can be assumed that his layoff would not be significant; he did not receive any medical suspensions after his dominating performance against Okami.

Also in the division, Akiyama plans to drop to 170lbs for future bouts in the UFC.

A man who once came into the UFC with much anticipation and potential is now looking for revitalization as a welterweight after going 1-3, three fight losing streak, in his tenure in...
