They are at it again.
The UFC, once again, plans to counter-program a Strikeforce event. However, it's different this time around, as the UFC plans to hold a live event on Spike to go against the recently announced Strikeforce: "Nashville" event, which airs on CBS on April 17.
The news comes courtesy of Figure Four Online, which reports UFC President Dana White's confirmation of the event.
According to the report, a middleweight bout between Wanderlei Silva and Yoshihiro Akiyama could be a part of the card, however, it will not headline the event as first rumored earlier this week on The Underground. Also, a welterweight bout between former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra and Mike Swick is being discussed to be the night's co-main event.
The UFC may feel that Strikeforce: "Nashvile" is venerable and that they can lure fans away from the card with an event of their own due to the fact that top-ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko is not fighting on the card.
Strikeforce: "Nashville" features three title bouts, including a headlining middleweight title bout between Strikeforce champion Jake Shields and UFC cast-off Dan Henderson. Also, Strikeforce light-heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi will defend his belt against Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal and Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez will take on DREAM lightweight champ Shinya Aoki.
There had been previous talk that if the UFC put together a show on the same day as Strikeforce: "Nashville," CBS would move the Strikefroce show to April 24, which would then go against the WEC's first PPV event. Strikeforce and CBS are now unlikely to move the show with the event being recently announced and tickets set to go on sale in the coming days.
This isn't the first time the UFC put together a live card to go head-to-head with another promotion, as they hastily put together UFC Fight Night 14 on July 19 to counter-program Affliction: "Banned," which was the now-defunct promotion's debut event.
UFN 14 saw UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva score a quick victory over James Irvin in his light-heavyweight debut, and Affliction: "Banned" saw top-ranked heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko dispatch former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia.
The UFC has also counter-programmed recent Strikeforce events with previous PPV events, as well as special programming such as "UFC Main Events."
If booked, Silva and Akiyama will be fighting sooner then expected, as they were originally rumored to meet at UFC 115 in June. They were first supposed to square off at UFC 110 last month, however, the UFC ultimately opted to pit Michael Bisping against Silva.
Silva recently hinted at his bout against Akiyama possibly taking place at new date.
"I know I'm going to fight soon," said Silva to MMAWeekly.com. "I'm going to have a great surprise for my fans what date I'm going to fight. I'm so close to signing my next fight, we'll talk about things a little bit more, and I think I'm going to be fighting soon."
Silva is fresh off of a close unanimous decision win over Michael Bisping at UFC 110 on Feb. 20. Prior to the win, he lost two straight bouts against Rich Franklin and Quinton Jackson. Akiyama, who holds a nearly perfect 13-1 (2 NC) MMA record, has not fought since defeating Alan Belcher in his Octagon debut at UFC 100 in July. The exciting middleweight bout...
