Ultimate Fight Night 20 Results: Maynard and Sadollah victorious; Escudero upset
by FiveKnuckles.com Staff on January 12, 2010

Undefeated lightweight standout Gray Maynard took revenge for the only blemish on his MMA career Monday evening by besting The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season 5 champion Nate Diaz via split decision. The Ultimate Fighter 5 rematch served as The Ultimate Fight Night 20 main event.

The two previously battled it out in the TUF 5 semifinals back in 2007, with Diaz scoring a second-round submission victory over the high powered wrestler. This time around however, Maynard avoided going to the ground altogether, content to stand and trade with the much longer Diaz. The two squared up and traded punches for much of the three round battle with Maynard landing the harder, more effective blows to secure the win.

It's uncertain whether the victory will be enough to entice UFC matchmaker Joe Silva to pit the undefeated former Michigan wrestling star against current champion and pound-for-pound great B.J. Penn.

It was thought that Maynard could contend with Penn after a good showing against Diaz, but his uneven performance may have opened the door for fellow contender Frankie Edgar to sneak in against Penn -- or, as some have speculated, Penn could move up to welterweight to battle a top contender such as Jon Fitch or Thiago Alves while the lightweight division plays out to present him with a suitable clear-cut contender.
