Team Quest product Dave Jansen has yet to taste defeat in his short mixed martial arts career. The undefeated Oregon native earned his first win just three years ago and continues to progress with each victory.
Following his successful WEC debut over Rich Crunkilton at WEC 43, Jansen stands at a perfect 14-0 and would love nothing more than to hand upcoming opponent Kamal Shalorus (5-0-1) his first loss.
FiveKnuckles.com caught up with Jansen just days before he prepares to enter the cage on Sunday at WEC 46.
FiveKnuckles.com: Your upcoming opponent Kamal Shalorus's striking looked pretty solid when he fought Will Kerr at WEC 44. How do you feel your striking measures up to his?
Dave Jansen: I don't think Kamal has the advantage in the stand up game against me. He looks predictable in that 95% of his strikes are looping power punches. His strengths are his grappling and his explosiveness, but I feel that with good movement and solid straight punches, I can nullify the majority of his offense. We both have solid wrestling backgrounds, so that could lead to a stand up slugfest. Time will tell.
FiveKnuckles.com: Being your second fight on the big stage, do you have any newcomer jitters or is getting the first one out of the way helping with the nerves?
Dave Jansen: Having already fought in the WEC will certainly help calm the nerves a little, but I know I'll still be wound up and anxious to get the fight over and done with in the week leading up to the fight. A fight's a fight, and there will always be that feeling of anticipation and dread, gradually changing into focus and acceptance as the big day draws nearer.
FiveKnuckles.com: You are a big fan of books and in our last interview revealed that with the meaning of the tattoo on your chest. What are you currently reading and what else do you do to pass the time away from the gym?
Dave Jansen: As far as books go, I'm still stuck on reading fantasy mostly. Yeah, I know it's uncool, but I swear these books help my fight game some how. Right now I'm about halfway through R.A Salvatore's "The Ghost King", but I've actually been spending most of my down time gaming these days. Mostly, I've been playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. No big surprise there. I'm convinced that Modern Warfare 2 helps my fighting as well. That game gets all those fast twitch reflexes firing as they should.
FiveKnuckles.com: You definitely don't seem the type but have you ever been in a bar fight, street fight or have any interesting stories to tell FiveKnuckles.com readers?
Dave Jansen: I've never been in a bar fight, but this guy did start a fight with me on a gravel road once. It happened during the fall of 2000, right before Thanksgiving, six years before I started training in MMA. I was at an outdoor party near Mt. Hood with one of my friends who lived around that area. There was a bonfire. My friend made the mistake of telling the local badass not to mess with me because I knew how to wrestle and had won a state title. So of course "The toughest kid in Brightwood, Oregon" had to try to test himself against me. To make a long story shorter, I got hit a couple times, but ended up throwing him on his head with two German suplexes....
