One of the most sought after prospects in the sport, Phil Davis, has signed a multi-fight contract with the UFC.
UFC light-heavyweight Brandon Vera first broke the news of his teammate's UFC signing on his official Twitter account.
"Just got the word from my man Phil "Mr. Wonderful" Davis -- he just got his UFC contract," Vera exclaimed in the post." Congratulations Phil! Time to show the world!!!"
Davis spoke about his UFC signing and also about what he expects when he competes for MMA's premier organization.
"It means a lot just to be on the biggest stage in mixed martial arts, to be with a great company. Davis told Sherdog.com. "It's a great place for me to start my career. I expect world-class challenges. The UFC has the best fighters in the world. You want to go up against the best in the world, and you’re guaranteed to do that in the UFC... You can expect madness, a little bit of this, a little bit of that. I’m a hard worker, determined, and I get the job done."
As was the case with Jake Rosholt, Ben Askren, Cain Velasquez and Johny Hendricks, Davis is the latest talented, highly decorated collegiate wrestlers to make the transition from wrestling to MMA.
Davis wrestled collegiately at Penn State University, where he was a four-time All-American and amassed an impressive 116-20 record; which included a 26-1 record in his senior year when he won a 2008 NCAA national championship (197 pounds).
Davis has put together a 4-0 professional MMA record. His last three wins have all been by stoppage, while competing for such notable promotions such as Palace Fighting Championships and Ultimate Warrior Challenge. His lone decision win came in his pro MMA debut in October 2008, when he defeated Brett Chism.
Davis hasn't fought since defeating David Baggett via first-round submission at a Ultimate Cage Fighting Challenge event in June.
The 25-year-old light-heavyweight splits his time training in his home state of Pennsylvania and at Brandon Vera's Alliance Training Center in San Diego, California. Also when in California, he heads over to train at the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose.
Davis was the latest subject of FiveKnuckles.com's running series, "MMA Elite Prospect Profile's." Click here to check out the interview and go more in depth with the UFC latest elite prospect.
