Urijah Faber: Not opposed to fighting in the UFC
by Jason Lee on February 08, 2010

For years, former WEC Featherweight Champion, Urijah Faber, dominated the WEC featherweight division. He sported a nearly perfect record coming into the WEC and winning the featherweight championship with only one loss on his record. That to current UFC lightweight contender Tyson Griffin via third-round knockout back in 2005 at Gladiator Challenge 42.

Faber recently answered questions from the fans during a Q&A on Thursday, and the topic of a move to the UFC's lightweight division for another shot at Griffin was discussed.

"I'd love to get that fight again," Faber said.

Expressing his willingness to compete in 'superfights,' he also discussed the possibility of fighting B.J. Penn, as well.

"B.J. and I went on a USO tour together, and we're buddies, and we've trained together, but we're in the fight game to find out who's the man. I'm sure B.J. wouldn't have a problem fighting me, and I don't have a problem fighting him. We'll be buddies later."

But, he explains that he would probably take some fights at 135 lbs., first.

"I'll probably go down to 135, then go up to 155," he said. "I'm trying to fight superfights that fans want to see. At this point for me, I've had 26 fights, and I just want to do big, exciting fights. Go up? Go down? It's all good."

After his first loss to Griffin, Faber dropped to 145 lbs., and moved on to become the WEC Featherweight Champion at WEC 19, holding that title for 2 years, until he was defeated by Mike Brown via first-round TKO. A second win over Jens Pulver, prompted a rematch against Brown for the title, which ended in a 5 round war and Brown coming out the victor.

Faber now has another shot at the WEC featherweight title, this time against Jose Aldo, the man who defeated Brown to win the title. The match-up will take place at WEC 48: Aldo vs. Faber on April 24, during WEC's first ever pay-per-view event.

Win or lose, it will be interesting to see where Faber takes his career to next.

Hizoka: Faber just seems small for 55.. especially if he can comfortably make the cut to 35 Jason Lee: I'm not convinced that Faber is 5' 6" to be honest, haha. I think Faber would do well at 155 in the UFC.. lots of great matchups for him up there. I would love to see Faber vs. Edgar the most in the UFC.. Faber vs. Guida would also be a great fight to watch. I'm not sure he would be able to take Penn, but wouldn't mind seeing that fight, too. Btw.. this is my first 5K article.. hope you guys like it. Internet Tufguy: I think it's a well written article, but the topic has been touched on quite a bit. It was nice to get a quote of him saying he'd love to fight Tyson Griffin again. I enjoyed the reading experience, overall. thug4less: Excellent first article, Mortis. Faber definitely should not move up to 155. He would probably dismantle a lot of the lower-tier people but even the gatekeepers at 155 would give him problems. Castle: I've had this debate with my soon to be Father in Law many times. He thinks Faber could rule the world. I think he is good right where he is at. I definitely think a drop to 135 would be good and he would do some serious domination. I just don't think he would make the UFC's 155. I'm sure he would have some great fights and probably tear the lower level fighters up and give the rest a hell of a fight. I just don't think he would get past the top guys. Storm: Faber would get brutalized at LW imo. hell, i think he would have a hard time competing at the WECs LW division. i would love to see a Tyson Griffin rematch. i dont think that Griffin would KO him this time, but i definitely think that Tyson would dominate him and get a decision.
