For years, former WEC Featherweight Champion, Urijah Faber, dominated the WEC featherweight division. He sported a nearly perfect record coming into the WEC and winning the featherweight championship with only one loss on his record. That to current UFC lightweight contender Tyson Griffin via third-round knockout back in 2005 at Gladiator Challenge 42.
Faber recently answered questions from the fans during a Q&A on Thursday, and the topic of a move to the UFC's lightweight division for another shot at Griffin was discussed.
"I'd love to get that fight again," Faber said.
Expressing his willingness to compete in 'superfights,' he also discussed the possibility of fighting B.J. Penn, as well.
"B.J. and I went on a USO tour together, and we're buddies, and we've trained together, but we're in the fight game to find out who's the man. I'm sure B.J. wouldn't have a problem fighting me, and I don't have a problem fighting him. We'll be buddies later."
But, he explains that he would probably take some fights at 135 lbs., first.
"I'll probably go down to 135, then go up to 155," he said. "I'm trying to fight superfights that fans want to see. At this point for me, I've had 26 fights, and I just want to do big, exciting fights. Go up? Go down? It's all good."
After his first loss to Griffin, Faber dropped to 145 lbs., and moved on to become the WEC Featherweight Champion at WEC 19, holding that title for 2 years, until he was defeated by Mike Brown via first-round TKO. A second win over Jens Pulver, prompted a rematch against Brown for the title, which ended in a 5 round war and Brown coming out the victor.
Faber now has another shot at the WEC featherweight title, this time against Jose Aldo, the man who defeated Brown to win the title. The match-up will take place at WEC 48: Aldo vs. Faber on April 24, during WEC's first ever pay-per-view event.
Win or lose, it will be interesting to see where Faber takes his career to next.
