Urijah Faber drops to bantamweight; will face Takeya Mizugaki at WEC 50
by Jacob Camargo on June 09, 2010

As reported last week, popular former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber (23-4) will indeed make the move down to the bantamweight division for his next fight. Welcoming him to the 135-pound weight class will be Japan's Takeya Mizugaki (13-4-2).

The fight is set to take place at the, as of yet, officially unannounced WEC 50 on August 18 in Las Vegas, Nevada. News of the bout was first reported by MMAWeekly.com. Given Faber's popularity and notoriety, the bout will likely take the night's co-main event slot.

Following his loss to Jose Aldo at April's WEC 48, rumors that the former WEC featherweight champion was considering a move to the bantamweight division began to swirl. Earlier this month, Faber answered those rumors and all but confirmed plans to move down to bantamweight for his next fight.

"From the sound of things, they want me to go down to 35," Faber said. "It's something I've wanted to do for a long time, go down and have some fights down there. So, I'll probably have a couple of fights down there and maybe go back up to 45. I'm a small 45-pounder, I mean, all through college I was 133-pounds. It isn't like it's been a hard cut for 145-pounds. I'm probably a natural 135-pounder, so it won't be difficult for me."

Faber has gone 2-3 in his last five bouts, most recently suffering a unanimous decision loss to Jose Aldo in the main event of the aforementioned WEC 48 event in April, which was the promotion's first ever Pay-Per-View card.

Prior to the dismal stretch, Faber was ranked the number one featherweight in the world after putting together an impressive 13-fight winning streak from Oct. 2005 to June 2008, which included wins in his first six WEC bouts.

"The California Kid" has put together an 8-3 WEC record, capturing the promotion's featherweight title in March 2006 by defeating Cole Escovedo. He held on to the title for more then two years, which included five successful title defenses. Faber holds other notable WEC wins over current bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz, Chance Farrar, Jeff Curran, Raphael Assuncao and Jens Pulver (x2).

Mizugaki is 2-1 in his last three bouts, most recently defeating Rani Yahya, which also took place at April's WEC 48. His only blemish over that span came in his previous fight against Scott Jorgensen at WEC 45 in December.

Mizugaki sports an even 2-2 record with the WEC, losing to former WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres in his WEC debut, which was then followed by a win over veteran Jeff Curran at WEC 42. He has been competing professionally for over five-years and is a longtime veteran of Japan's Cage Force and Shooto promotions.

 |  (10) Comments Ares: Faber's an interesting prospect at 135, I look forward to see how he does there. Anthony: At these lighter weight classes, moving down provides nowhere near the benefit that going from, say, 205 to 185 does. This is a waste of time on Faber's part. momentous: sweet! you compare urijah faber to say mike brown or jose aldo... and he is a lot smaller.. great move here! cannot wait! war faber GO HARD: it should be an awesome fight as well... mizugaki is no punk. Mtx: This card just keeps getting better. Wandering_Minstrel: I think Faber will do well at 135. He really was a small 145er. Gone are the days of fighting at your walking weight. Plus he's fighting Mizugaki and that dude is one tough sunuvabitch. The Hitman: Faber will be excellent at 135. This fight should be a war with Mizugaki's granite chin. I like this card. WEC has really been good lately.
