UFC 107's Frank Mir vs. Cheick Kongo match up will be a battle of styles as the jiu-jitsu black belt prepares to take on the well-versed striker. The two will face off on Saturday, Dec. 12 at UFC 107.
The former UFC heavyweight champion, Mir, acknowledged the high level of conditioning and punching power that Kongo holds, and said that he will be looking to take the French fighter to the ground in order to gain an advantage. Kongo's striking skills, combined with his 82-inch reach (compared to Mir's 79-inch), will prove to be tricky opposition. However, according to Mir, it is no secret that Kongo has some of the worst ground game in the heavyweight division.
"I hope to take advantage of that," said Mir. "I feel that I'm pretty decent on the ground and I'm looking to make myself even better. If I grab him and get him to the ground, I think that definitely plays into my advantage to winning the fight, more so than standing up and having a boxing match with him."
Mir has been looking to welterweight Georges St. Pierre for some insight on how to wrestle and take down a striker:
"How does [St. Pierre] do it? Does he shoot from halfway across the ring, do you ever see the shot? Never. He strikes with you, just enough for you to think you're in a striking match and the minute you forget that 'oh yeah, there's take downs, still' - he takes you down. It's not that his take downs are the most intricate, crazy take downs in the world. They're very sharp, very sound, technically perfect, but basic. He just has phenomenal, phenomenal timing. And that's what I look to do in this fight with Cheick Kongo."
