Video: Georges St. Pierre wins Canadian Athlete of the Year award
by Natalia Baage on December 16, 2009

UFC welterweight Georges St. Pierre cannot help but rack up awards and accolades. And another Canadian Athlete of the Year award is another addition to his ever-growing inventory.

Praised for his takedown defense and wrestling, he has also confirmed his status as a great striker and great jiu-jitsu artist, thanks to his trainers Firas Zahabi and Greg Jackson.

His next fight will take place at UFC 111 on March 27, 2010, in Newark, N.J. The Canadian will take on U.K.'s Dan Hardy in another title defense.

St. Pierre, who has captured the welterweight belt twice in his UFC career, is arguably the most dominant welterweight that the Octagon has ever seen. While Matt Hughes is largely considered the best 170-pounder, St. Pierre currently holds a 2-1 record over the American. St. Pierre has also defeated other notable welterweights like Matt Serra, Jon Fitch, Josh Koscheck, Sean Sherk, Frank Trigg, and current UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn.

This is the second year in a row (2008 and 2009) that St. Pierre has won the Rogers Sportsnet Canadian Athlete of the Year award.
