After winning the Strikeforce middleweight belt on Saturday night, Jake Shields told the media that former middleweight champion Cung Le will not fight him.
Le won the title back in March 2008, but relinquished his belt in mid-September 2009. Shields and Jason "Mayhem" Miller were then granted a title fight, with the winner capturing the Strikeforce middleweight belt. Shields defeated Miller by unanimous decision last Saturday night.
In a post-fight press conference, a member of the media asked Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker if there is any possibility that the newly-crowned champion Shields could face the former champion Le in an upcoming event. While Coker said that discussions would need to be made with Le, Shields said that Le will not fight him.
"Cung won't fight me," said Shields. "That's why he vacated the belt, obviously, and then fights a month later."
Currently, Shields is uncertain if he wants his next fight to be a middleweight title defense or if he will drop back down to the welterweight division. He said that he will have to review the opponents first before he makes the decision, but is willing to fight in either division.
