Nate Marquardt is not somebody who wants to lose. He has been tauted as the next middleweight champion, and is not about to let anyone get in his way.
So when he wanted to strengthen his grappling skills for his upcoming fight against Chael Sonnen, who did he turn to? UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre.
Even though Sonnen has only won by submission thrice in his eight-year career, he was an NCAA Division 1 wrestler. To combat any unforeseen problems, Marquardt, who has strong skills on his feet and on the ground, has been working with one of the best ground fighters in the sport. The pair worked on jiu-jitsu, wrestling, and take down defense.
Tomorrow night's UFC 109 fight between Marquardt and Sonnen will determine who is the number one contender for the middleweight belt. The winner will get the next title shot against the victor of Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort.
Last year, Marquardt was promised a title shot against Silva after he defeated Demian Maia at UFC 102 in August. However, that position was later given to Belfort instead after his first-round TKO win over Rich Franklin in September at UFC 103.
In his current quest for the belt, a win over Sonnen guarantees him a place against the champion in the next title fight, which could possibly take place in the fall of 2010.
