The latest addition to the UFC roster is that of longtime MMA veteran Vladimir Matyushenko, who will return to the promotion for the first time in nearly six years to take on Croatian light heavyweight Igor Pokrajac at UFC 103.
In Matyushenko's first stint with the UFC, from June 2001 to September 2003, he amassed a 3-2 record with wins over Yuki Kondo, Travis Wiuff and Pedro Rizzo. He suffered losses against Tito Ortiz in a light-heavyweight title bout and Andrei Arlovski which led to his departure from the UFC's roster. He has put together a 9-1 record since leaving the organization which includes a 6-0 undefeated record with the now-defunct IFL promotion.
Matyushenko most recently defeated former UFC fighter Jason Lambert at Call To Arms 1 in May. Prior to that win, he was defeated by Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at Affliction:"Day of Reckoning" in January. Matyushenko has managed to put together an impressive record of 22-4 in 12 years of competition with other career wins over the likes of Tim Boetsch, Alex Schoenauer, Anthony Ruiz and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.
UFC newcomer Pokrajac (21-5) is riding an 8-fight win streak into the octagon. His most recent coming against Kalvis Gebauers via technical knockout at WFC 8: "D-Day" in April. He's had stoppage wins in 18 of his 21 career victories. Pokrajac is also a member of Team Cro Cop and is known as the top sparring partner for Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, who is also scheduled to fight at UFC 103. He hasn't fared too well against top competition though, suffering losses to UFC veteran Assuerio Silva and former EliteXC fighter Mamed Khalidov.
In other UFC 103 news, the UFC also recently confirmed two previously rumored lightweight bouts in Dan Lauzon vs. Rafaello Oliveira and Rob Emerson vs. Rafael dos Anjos for the event.
The now 13-bout UFC 103 event will take place on September 19 from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. It will be headlined by a 195-pound catchweight bout between Rich Franklin and Vitor Belfort.
Also slated for the main card is a heavyweight tilt between former PRIDE and K-1 superstar Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic vs. surging heavyweight prospect Junior Dos Santos. In addition, Martin Kampmann will battle it out against Mike Swick to determine the number one contender in the welterweight division.
