WEC 42 results; Bowles new bantamweight champ
by Jacob Camargo on August 10, 2009

WEC 42 is officially a wrap. The event took place last night, August 9, from the jam-packed Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In the main event of the evening, Brian Bowles captured the WEC bantamweight championship scoring a huge upset over former champion, Miguel Torres. Torres and Bowles came out a brief feeling-out period before Bowles caught Torres and wobbled him with a powerful right hand. But the champ was able to recover and answered back with a few shots of his own. Bowles eventually scored a takedown but was subjected to a series of high level submission attempts leading into a number of nice upkicks. The fight eventually made its way back to the standup where Torres caught Bowles with a big right. He followed that up with an intense flurry, charging Bowles and landing shot after shot, but Bowles was able to counter with a big right hook that floored the champion. Torres hit the mat and Bowles unloaded a barrage of blows until Torres was clearly out cold leading to the referee stoppage.

In the co-main event, Dominick Cruz proved himself a worthy number one bantamweight contender handing Joseph Benavidez his first career loss via unanimous decision. Benavidez tried to nullify a 4-inch reach advantage by charging in with flurries but as he charged Cruz was able to avoid damage and punish him with quick counters. He was also able, surprisingly, to take Cruz down with ease. Cruz picked up the decision victory with scores of 30-27, 29-28, 29-28. With the victory Cruz moves to 14-1. His only loss coming against Benavidez's training partner, Urijah Faber.

Other results from main card action include; Takeya Mizugaki earning a split decision win over Jeff Curran in what was a entertaining back and forth bantamweight battle. Danny Castillo scored a second-round TKO win over Ricardo Lamas. In a bout that got bumped up to the televised portion of the card from the preliminary card, former WEC featherweight title contender Leonard Garcia barely got by Jameel Massouh scoring a split decision win.

In notable preliminary card action, Shane Roller and Marcus Hicks put on a entertaining back and forth battle that saw Roller walk away with the win and IFL veteran L.C. Davis made a successful WEC debut by scoring a split decision win over fellow WEC newcomer Javier Vazquez.
