WEC 43: "Cerrone vs. Henderson" results
by Jacob Camargo on October 11, 2009

WEC 43 is officially wrapped up and what an awesome night of fights it was. Ben Henderson captured the WEC interim lightweight title by defeating Donald Cerrone in a fight for the ages.

The event took place last night, Oct. 10, from the AT&T Center in San Antonio, TX, and aired on Versus.

In the main event of the evening, Ben Henderson and Donald Cerrone put on a very exciting, back and forth fight, which saw Henderson edge out Cerrone to take home the WEC interim lightweight belt. By pulling off the upset over Cerrone, Henderson spoiled the plans of a much talked about possible Varner vs. Cerrone rematch.

The fight began by Cerrone slipping and falling after he threw a kick. Henderson rushed in, looking to take advantage. Cerrone caught Henderson as he rushed in and secured a tight guillotine choke on him, which he made tighter by rolling and eventually landing on top of Henderson. When the fight looked over, Henderson somehow got out of the choke, but Cerrone, from there, transitioned into a triangle choke. After Henderson got out of that submission, he scored a take-down and spent the rest of the round, reigning down punches inside of Cerrone's guard.

Henderson shot in and took Cerrone to the ground at the beginning of the second round. Cerrone did not just lay on his back though as he threw punches and elbows from the bottom. Cerrone went for another submission attempt on Henderson. He tried to lock in an armbar on Henderson, which "Smooth" was able to fight out of. Henderson ended the second round much like the first round by standing over Cerrone and patiently dropping power shots to the stomach and head. Much of the same action was shown in the third round as Henderson frustrated Cerrone with his superior wrestling to keep Cerrone off balance and on his back. Cerrone was unable to use his stand up skills as Henderson kept taking him down and using ground and pound.

In the fourth round, Cerrone looked composed and determined despite losing the last two rounds. He was able to trap Henderson in another deep guillotine choke, however, Henderson was once again able to free himself. Henderson then looked for a take-down, but Cerrone showed improved take-down defense by fending them off. Cerrone finished off the round by doing damaging Henderson with punches, knees and kicks.

In the fifth and final round, Cerrone came at Henderson with everything he had. Henderson got Cerrone to the mat once again, but "Cowboy" attemped numerous submissions on Henderson, including triangle chokes, shoulder locks, Oma Platas and kimuras. Henderson kept fighting and did not relent or give in when he was in the process of being submitted. Just seconds before the bell went off, Cerrone again went for a triangle before transitioning to an armbar/kimura before the fight finally came to an end.

The decision was close.  All of the judges scored the bout 48-47 in favor of Henderson. The win moves Henderson's MMA record to 10-1, with an undefeated 3-0 mark in the WEC. Cerrone drops to a still-impressive 10-2.

Following the fight, Henderson gave praise to Cerrone:

"Donald Cerrone, my hat's off to him, he's a great, great guy," said Henderson. "That was an absolute war. That's exactly what I wanted coming into the fight. Now I don't ever want to do it again, please no."

An amped up Henderson then directed his attention at WEC lightweight champion, Jamie Varner.
