WEC 44: "Brown vs. Aldo" is officially a wrap and what another exciting night of fights it was from the UFC's sister promotion. The event saw Jose Aldo capture the WEC featherweight title by defeating Mike brown in impressive fashion.
WEC 44 took place last night, Nov. 18, from the Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, NV and aired live on Versus.
In the main event of the evening, Jose Aldo notched a second-round TKO win over former champ Mike Brown to be crowned the new WEC featherweight champion. Aldo is normally a fast starter but this time was different as the stakes were higher against a top-level caliber opponent. He patiently waited for Brown to engage to begin the first round and as soon as he hit Brown with a big shot, Brown shot in for a take down. Aldo defended the take down very well and also displayed excellent takedown defense throughout the fight. The pair spent the rest of the opening frame trading shots; Aldo scoring with shots from distance and in the clinch and Brown, not one to back down, answering back with strikes of his own.
Aldo hurt Brown with an early exchange to being the second round. Brown shot in to try to take Aldo down, however, Aldo stuffed the takedown and a scramble ensured, which eventually saw Aldo put Brown on his back and immediately move into the mount position. Brown then gave up his back and Aldo quickly sunk in his hooks flattening Brown out. From there, Aldo begin to rain down heavy power punches. The barrage continued as Brown was forced to cover up and was unable to intelligently defend himself forcing referee Steve Mazzagatti to call a halt to the contest 80-seconds into the second round.
The new champ, Aldo, moves his overall MMA record to 16-1 and is now 6-0 in the WEC. The loss snaps a 10-fight winning streak for Brown and drops his overall MMA record to 22-5 and 4-1 with the WEC.
Following the fight, a emotional Aldo spoke via UFC veteran Pedro Rizzo, who acted as a translator.
"For me he was a pretty tough fighter," Aldo said. "Mike is very strong. I respected him a lot in the beginning of the fight. I had to wait for the right moment to finish the fight. When I found the space, I threw all the punches."
A disappointed Brown voiced his sentiments moments later.
"He had a great night." Brown commented. "He was landing the shots and I wasn't. That's how the game is. He's a great fighter."
In the second featured bout of the evening, TUF 5 runner-up Manny Gamburyan earned a unanimous decision win over fellow UFC veteran Leonard Garcia. With the win, Gamburyan moved into featherweight title contention and could get the first crack at Aldo.
Gamburyan implemented a solid game plan, utilizing takedowns while avoiding Garcia's brutal power. The win moves Gamburyan's overall MMA record to 10-4 and 2-0 in the WEC. With the loss, Garcia drops to 13-5 and 3-2 with the WEC.
