Wanderlei Silva vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama now slated for UFC 116 in July
by Jacob Camargo on March 25, 2010

A long-rumored middleweight bout between Wanderlei Silva and Yoshihiro Akiyama is now in the works for UFC 116 on July 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The news comes courtesy of a report at Fighter's Only.

Though not officially announced, UFC 116 will likely feature the return of UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar against the winner of this Saturday's UFC 111 interim heavyweight title bout between Frank Mir and Shane Carwin.

Silva and Akiyama were originally slated to face each other at UFC 110 last month, however, the UFC opted to pit Silva against Michael Bisping who he subsequently defeated.

Following Silva's win at UFC 110, UFC President Dana White confirmed that Silva would next face Akiyama. Silva strong voiced his interest in a fight with Akiyama after White told him that the Japanese superstar wanted a fight against him.

Silva (33-10-1) made a successful middleweight debut in his last bout, scored a unanimous decision win over Michael Bisping at the aforementioned UFC 110 event in February. Prior to the win, he suffered back-to-back losses to Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Rich Franklin. Silva sports a 3-5 UFC record suffering other Octagon losses against notables such as Tito Ortiz, Vitor Belfort and Chuck Liddell.

The longtime Pride veteran has been competing professionally for over 13 years, scoring notable wins over the likes of Dan Henderson, Kazushi Sakuraba, Ricardo Arona and Quinton Jackson (x2). He has finished 26 of his 32 career wins, including 23 coming by TKO or KO.

Akiyama hasn't fought since defeating Alan Belcher via split decision in his UFC debut in July 2009 at UFC 100. Belcher and Akiyama earned "Fight of the Night" honors for their performance at the event, and each took home an extra $100,000 for the bonus. He has not been defeated since suffering his only career loss against Jerome LeBanner in March 2005.

The K-1 and DREAM veteran sports a near perfect MMA record of 13-1, with all but one of his 13 career wins being finishes. He holds notable wins over the likes of Melvin Manhoef and Denis Kang.

 |  (34) Comments Mtx: Love this fight. Can't wait for it. Little_Kang: As much as I am a fan of both fighters, I want Wanderlei to win, just in hopes that it shows Sexy that he should cut to 170 Kable: Thing about Wanderlei he has always had an ability to be able to beat up asian fighters, I don't think he has ever lost to one, Correct me if i'm wrong. I think Akiyama could easily surprise us though, he is a beast. Wandering_Minstrel: This fight is gonna be AWESOME. "Sexy" is so much tougher than people give him credit for. I also think he's got a much better ground game than Wandy. GO HARD: i rooting for wandy cuz i want to see wandy vs a silva eventually. GO HARD: ive done cards just having fun. u know how most people just make like 10 fights... when i do mine i usually try to make it "believeable".... the undercards are undercard worthy... but exciting and relavent. justinmw2008: this looks liek a very exciting fight i would half to say silva on this there both black belts in bjj but i think is silva gose on groudn with him he will get sub but if he stands soem oen is getting ko.....{if u catch my drift} it is a excting fight and looking forward to seeign it The Hitman: i think wandy is going to take this one. sexyama didnt look that good to me against belcher, in fact i thought he lost that fight. but it was definitly close. i see wandy landing the better shots, but sexyama is tough as they come Wandering_Minstrel: I have to agree with Kable here. Akiyama won that fight. Oma Plata: Akiyama won. Im pulling for Sexy here. Wandy v The Spider would be nice, but I wouldnt want to see the beating The Spider would put on my other boy Wandy. Oma Plata D_V: sexyama easily beta belcher. it was beauty and the beast. the sexiest fighter on the planet vs. the ugliest tattoo ever on a fighter, or anyone for that matter, on the planet. good won out over evil. the blob of jonny cash's bloated face on belcher will hold him back from ever being anything but ridiculous. i hate watching him fight. i get a sore kneck. i can't stop looking at that fucking thing. i think that's why people stupidly think belcher was close in that fight. they were mesmerized. not only do i kink my kneck looking at that shit but when it's in the forefront i can only shake my head. I'm shaking it now, even. ridiculous. IwishIwasMMA: I like.
