What's Next For The UFC On Versus 2 Main Card Fighters
by Bryan Levick on August 02, 2010

Once again the UFC showed why it is the preeminent MMA organization in the world. Last night's card produced some thrilling bouts and that can only bode well for the UFC's future events.

We saw two Japanese veterans show that maybe, just maybe Japanese MMA isn't dead yet. We saw a man just 23 years-young dominate and discard of a man 16 years his senior who has also gone toe-to-toe with some of the best mixed martial artists in the world.

Everyone and their mother are contemplating the next move for Jon Jones. Let's take a look at what could be in store for him and the other seven fighters who fought on the main card last night.

Tyson Griffin:

With two losses in a row Griffin has gone from someone who was on the verge of contending for the lightweight title to someone who needs to right their ship. We all know Griffin is extremely talented and what happened to him last night can happen to any fighter on any given night. With that being said, he looked flat from the beginning and didn't resemble the Tyson Griffin I have known for the past four years.

There are no gimme fights in the UFC's lightweight division so Griffin will have to fight his way through this slump. I can see him matched up with Spencer Fisher, another fighter who is riding a two fight losing streak. I wouldn't mind seeing him and the man who he replaced last night, Joe Stevenson go at it. There are many different scenarios that can play out over the next month or so. Another interesting fight would be Griffin against the loser of the Joe Lauzon-Terry Etim bout scheduled for UFC 118. Time will only tell whether this is a bump in the road or the real Griffin.

Takanori Gomi:

"The Fireball Kid" sent a message to the UFC's lightweight division last night with one thunderous right hook to the jaw of Griffin. Gomi became the first man to finish Griffin and did so in resounding fashion. The emotion displayed by Gomi shows me that he is ready to make a name for himself inside the octagon. He may have lost convincingly to Kenny Florian in his UFC debut, but with that loss now behind him and a win under his belt the UFC's investment may turn out to be a good one.

I'd really love to see Gomi and Stevenson fight. I was really excited when it was first announced, but thought that Griffin would be equally exciting. If Stevenson isn't available how about putting Gomi in with George Sotiropoulos? A young up and coming fighter against a battle tested veteran. Can Gomi keep up with the tenacious grappling of Sotiropoulos? Or will Gomi put another contender flat on his back? One thing is for sure, with a rejuvenated Gomi the UFC's lightweight division got that much stronger.

Mark Munoz:

I have become a big fan of Munoz over the past year or so. He has a solid wrestling base and some brutal ground and pound. Losing to Yushin Okami is nothing to be ashamed of and it will only make Munoz stronger in my opinion. Munoz was going up against a tough veteran who may have been fighting for a title shot. Like any good mixed martial artist, Munoz will pick himself up off the mat and get back in the gym to correct...
