Who is Joe Warren?
by Paulo Silva on May 29, 2009

Joe Warren shocked the world this past weekend defeating Kid Yamamoto in Yokohama, Japan this past Tuesday. Warren fought Yamamoto in what was thought to be Yamamoto's comeback party at DREAM 9. Warren had other plans.

Yamamoto is arguably the most popular fighter in Japan but who is Joe Warren? This "no-namer" managed to beat the now 17-2 Yamamoto in just his 2nd pro fight. He's also defeated former WEC bantamweight champion, Chase Beebe, earlier this year via TKO at Beebe's DREAM debut back in March. This marks Warren's second impressive win in as many fights against heavily touted opponents.

Joe Warren comes from a freestyle wrestling background but quickly made the switch to Greco-Roman Wrestling and was the favorite to win the Olympics in 2007. Unfortunately, he tested positive for THC while trying to qualify but did participate and win the 2007 World Cup.

Warren wrestled at the University of Michigan where he began his wrestling career and was a favorite in the upcoming 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. However, Warren transitioned to mixed martial arts after meeting up with Dan Henderson and Team Quest in Oregon.

In preparation for his fight with Yamamoto, Warren trained with former WEC featherweight champion, Urijah Faber and Team Alpha Male. Joseph Benavidez (who also trains with Faber) was set to fight Yamamoto but Yamamoto pulled out just three days before the fight. Faber shortly got in touch with Warren and told him he knew how to beat Yamamoto.

Warren is currently undefeated and holds gold medals in the Pan American Championship, World Championships and the World Cup of Greco-Roman Wrestling.

Rumors of Warren coming to the WEC have surfaced but nothing has been officially announced.
