Royce Gracie may be returning to the Octagon at UFC Rio, according to a report by Fighters Only Magazine.
The report stats that, according to his manager, Gracie has cancelled a planned summer seminar tour of the UK so he can focus on preparing for his UFC fight in August.
CagePotato additionally reported that “The official reason given to the group organizing his UK appearances is that the UFC Hall-of-Famer has accepted an offer from the promotion to fight on its August 27 card in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil."
However, Dana White has denied the legend's involvement with the event. White may be denying the reports for leverage or just to keep things under wraps until more information about the event is released.
Fighters Only went on to say that the possibility of Gracie actually competing on the card isn't great and that he will likely take part in only a promotional aspect.
UFC Rio is destined to be a landmark event for the promotion, as they venture down to the home of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for the first time since 1998. The UFC is home to many notable Brazilians including: Anderson Silva, Thiago Alves, Mauricio Rua, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and many more.
Like most international UFC events, the card is sure to be filled with native fighters representing their country. An appearance by Royce Gracie would add one of the biggest names in Brazilian mixed martial arts to the event. Gracie hasn't fought since 2007, when he defeated Kazushi Sakuraba but later tested positive for anabolic steroids.
Is it worth it to feature Gracie on the card? Or would he simply be taking up the spot for a more deserving fighter? Leave your thoughts below.
