Lightweight prospect Willamy "Chiquerim" Freire is the latest member of the Brazilian-based Nova Unaio camp to sign with the UFC.
Freire's UFC debut is already set, as he will meet fellow Brazilian Thiago Tavares at UFC on Versus 2 on August 1 at the EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah. News of the bout was first reported by MMAjunkie.com, which states that both fighters have verbally agreed to the bout.
Freire (17-2) is currently riding a 11-fight winning streak, most recently defeating Yusuke Endo at a Shooto event in Japan on May 30. He has not tasted defeat since July 2007, where he suffered just his second career defeat at the hands of Hacran Dias. Freire has been competing professionally for over five-years and has finished 11 of his 17 career wins including nine by submission.
Tavares (14-3-1) was originally set to face Melvin Guillard at last weekend's UFC 114, however, he was forced off the event due to an elbow injury suffered in training.
Tavares most recently fought to a majority draw with Nik Lentz at UFC Fight Night 20 in January. It was his first fight since defeating Manny Gamburyan at UFC 94 in January 2009, as he was sidelined with a handful of injuries.
Tavares has been inconsistent during his time in the UFC, putting together a 4-3-1 record with the promotion, scoring other Octagon wins over Jason Black, Naoyuki Kotani and Michihiro Omigawa. His UFC losses have came against Tyson Griffin Matt Wiman and Kurt Pellegrino.
UFC on Versus 2 is headlined by a light-heavyweight bout between fast-rising phenom Jon Jones and 12-year veteran Vladimir Matyushenko. In the night's co-main event, rising middleweight contenders Yushin Okami and Mark Munoz will look to climb further into contention when they battle it out.
