A back injury has forced American Top Team trained fighter Wilson Gouveia to withdraw from his middleweight bout against Ed Herman at UFC 102. News of Gouveia's injury and withdrawal from the event was first reported by MMANews.com.
Prior to his injury, it was Gouveia who was having a hard time securing an opponent for the event. His first opponent, Team Quest's Chael Sonnen, withdrew from the bout to replace Yushin Okami at UFC 98 in May, where he defeated Dan Miller. Gouveia's second opponent James Irvin withdrew from the bout due to a severe knee injury.
Herman vacated his bout against Aaron Simpson at UFN 19 in September to replace Irvin and take on Gouveia. Dan Miller would replace Herman in the UFN 19 bout against Simpson.
No word yet if Gouveia's injury will have an impact on the recently shuffled matchups or if a replacement is being sought for Gouveia.
Gouveia was looking to rebound from a loss in his most recent fight against Nate Marquardt at UFC 95 in February. Prior to the loss, he had put together two straight wins. Gouveia is now 6-3 in nine fights with the UFC, with notable wins over Seth Petruzelli, Jason Lambert and Jason MacDonald. Out of his 12 career wins, 11 have been via stoppage and he holds a notable win outside the UFC over former UFC welterweight title contender Jon Fitch.
UFC 102 will take place on August 29 from the Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon and will be headlined by a heavyweight bout between MMA legends Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
