Yoshihiro Akiyama is in a precarious situation following his loss at UFC 133 to Vitor Belfort according to mmaweekly.com.
"This one was a lot different than his other losses. I love this fight. I thought that was going to be ‘Fight of the Night.' That was my prediction for that one. Vitor handled his business quickly," UFC president, Dana White, said.
Akiyama (13-4 (2 no contest)) is now 1-3 in the UFC, losing three straight since his UFC debut. Unlike his other two defeats to Chris Leben and Michael Bisping which produced Fight of the Night performances, Akiyama was quickly dismantled by Belfort at UFC 133.
A front kick, similar to the one Anderson Silva used to knockout Belfort in his last bout, was thrown by Akiyama. This prompted a barge of punches from Belfort, sending Akiyama face first plummeting to the canvas.
“When he (Akiyama) threw that front kick...He (Belfort) went crazy when he did that and ran in and finished the fight. That pissed him off,” White added.
Prior to this fight Akiyama has only been knocked out once in his career and was always known for his iron chin.
Looking ahead, there is a chance that Akiyama might stay with the UFC. The promotion is heading to Japan early next year for an event, where Akiyama is already an established star. Having him on the fight card would only aid the UFC in its reemergence in the Land of the Rising Sun.
Additionally, a wise career move for Akiyama would be dropping down to the welterweight division. Akiyama is one of the smaller middleweights in the UFC as he seldom cuts weight for a fight, contrasted to his peers.
In the meantime, Akiyama's UFC future is anyone's guess. Whether or not he will stay with the UFC remains to be seen.
