Yushin Okami: "If I use all my technique, power and speed, I will smash Anderson Silva"
by Hubert Lau on June 16, 2011

Yushin Okami, made a bold statement recently by saying that he will "smash" the UFC's eight time defending middleweight champion, Anderson Silva, in their upcoming bout at UFC 134 according to fightersonlymagazine.co.uk.

Okami and Silva have met before in 2006 at the Hawaiian promotion, Rumble on the Rock. The bout ended abruptly when Okami was knocked out from an illegal up-kick by Silva leading to a disqualification victory to Okami.

"I don't like that fight being down as a victory of mine but I had lessons there and I want to use everything...I hope that now we will have a real end. I know he is a complete fighter and has no weak points in his game. But, if I use all my technique, power and speed, I will smash Anderson Silva" Okami said on fightersonlymagazine.co.uk.

To complement his usual training regime, Okami has also been training with Chael Sonnen. Sonnen was the only man in recent memory to have even come close to defeating Silva, utilizing his wrestling to control the Brazilian for four rounds before getting submitted in the fifth via triangle choke. With Sonnen and Team Quest, whom Sonnen is a part of; Okami has been working feverishly on his wrestling and all facets of his game to prepare for "The Spider".

"I hope they will be able to look at me as the man who defeated Anderson Silva and begin to be my fans. My only thought is to become the first Asian champion in UFC" Okami said on fightersonlymagazine.co.uk.

Silva is currently regarded as one of the pound for pound best fighters in the world. He is the UFC's eight time defending middleweight champion, also riding a 14 fight win streak. Okami is on a three fight win streak of his own, defeating Nate Marquardt in his last bout that earned him the title fight with Silva.

Silva and Okami headline UFC 134 on August 27 at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

 |  (62) Comments JimLaheyTPS: Hahahahahahaha. Ok Okami. Good luck. snuff: But the power and speed goes to Silva. You don't have them Okami. :p Use your wrestling and strenght. That will win you the fight. GO HARD: wow that title is hilarious. thanks for the laugh... GO HARD: i really dont like u turds in this thread... im taking my talents to south beach. q>: / Lady Dragon 420: I can understand being confident but i don't think so. illegalpoke: I'm not sure if this is correct to say. But Okami wins. It's the biggest upset in MMA history. Bar none. Sound right? There's gotta be another huge upset out there. Serra over GSP? No. Couture over Maine-psycho? Giada Esposito: Well, Okami at least is starting to sound a bit like he is training with Sonnen. :D thug4less: I can only shake my head at this statement by Okami. Seriously, it's destroyed my ability to think rationally. Hizoka: Honestly i think if any MW can beat Silva is it Okami.... hes got better stand up then Sonnen and sonnen was able to use his piss poor stand up to setup a takedown on Anderson... and Okami is also very strong in the top position... The fight if Okami win will be boring as hell... but then again most of Silvas fights are boring anyways casue he just runs away the whole time. GO HARD: sonnen has good boxing and the best wrestling... and not so good sub defence. okami has ok stand up(its improved but still wont be effective vs andy) , great wrestling, and good sub defence... and andy is healthy. now excuse me while i swiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing!! horizontalcracker: If by technique, power, and speed he means grind out a close decision, he will definitely smash him, he, being silva. Wandering_Minstrel: Okami has the skills to beat Anderson. His strength and grappling are very under-rated and he has shown that he has solid enough skills on the feet. I'm amused that people are comparing Yushin's standup skills to Silva's. It doesn't mean this is going to be a toe-to-toe standup fight... this is MMA. Okami will use his jab to set up takedowns and seeing as he is working at a wrestling-heavy camp (Team Quest) his wrestling skills will be top notch. He will work top position, where he is very strong, to ride out a UD victory. That is the best-case scenario for Yushin Okami. Otherwise we're getting another Steven Seagal front kick to the face. SicJits: IMO, Sonnen's stand up is better then Okami. Sonnen has also done some golden gloves boxing, his footwork is way better then okami which creates openings and he is more willing to take a shot to give one then Okami. Sonnen also planted Silva on his butt way before the last 2 rounds Gren-Sama: I have always followed Yushin Okami. He is, a well rounded fighter, however, what makes him win upset after upset is his mentality, drive, and abilility to adapt to his opponents. Silva, well, he is the most solid fighter that there is. I hope it's a worth while fight for both of them. I have heard from a correspondent that Sonnen will not ever freely challenge Okami to a match. He told me that Sonnen had told a group that he had "no doubt in his mind that Okami will, by the end", ..(open ended)" be one the "greats" and he will have his title". I personally think if you can beat Silva, you're already one of the "greats" regardless. I will say if it comes down to heart and drive, Yushin Okami, will be the one on top. Hizoka: of the fighters that are in MW right now i cannot think of any that i would pick over Okami... He might be an exciting fighter buts hes like the Jon Fitch of MW... except for the fact he stand a chance at beating Silva where Fitch doesn't stand a chance beating GSP
